Presentation of App Smackdown: ASL Pocket Sign


    Pocket Sign is a free app where you can learn sign languages that offers a variety of interactive lessons and activities to help users learn sign language. It provides hundreds of videos of sign language lessons that are packed into small sized lessons. Some of those videos and interactive lessons includes interactive videos, fun questions, sign language alphabet, baby sign language, and so much more! Pocket Sign uses a very different approach compared to other sign language apps, where it teaches you so much at a basic level and then you build up your learning skills! Pocket Sign, has you completing small lessons every day, earning points, rewards, and achievements. This app tracks your progress and gives you personalized reminders to encourage you to practice sign language. Overall, this app is great for beginners and causal learners.

    Although you can use this app on your free time, Pocket Sign could help you with your educational experience and your professional career. Pocket Sign can help you with your educational experience because for example, let's just say you meet someone who only uses ASL by you having this app you can learn how to sign yourself and to communicate with that individual, therefore by you learning ASL you can create a strong bond with those who use ASL. Furthermore, Pocket Sign can help you with your professional career because you are always going to be meeting new people from your community. Some jobs may require you to have some knowledge on ASL especially if your job requires you to interact with a diverse group of individuals. To continue, Pocket Sign could help me with my future professional career because I would like to work in law enforcement and in law enforcement you will be meeting a diverse amount of people where you will have to learn sign language to communicate with those individuals!

  3. Pocket Sign is one of the few apps that I have ever seen to teach sign language digitally. I love how you tied Law Enforcement into the diversity of the population and how you’ll likely need sign language at some point in that profession!

  18. I appreciate you sharing this app and how it is used. My nephew in-law is deaf and I have picked up on some sign language over the years but not as much as I would have liked. I just downloaded this app now after watching your video. This will definitely come in handy.
